Service station delicacies in Japan

Well hi there! So glad you could click by today. Everything hunky-dory in your neck of the woods? Help yourself to some coffee and a treat – or wait till you read about the treats below. There are items offered as snacks at service centres in Japan and it comes from Japan Today.

Whenever you are out for a drive and you feel the need for a snack, there are always service stations nearby. And some of them have some pretty weird delicacies on sale. What are some of the weirdest? Website www.goo.ne.jp asked 1,000 or so readers in one of their surveys. Here are some of their answers.

  1. Octopus cabbage burger, Yummy!
  2. Cream stew-filled steamed bun,
  3. Cactus ice cream,
  4. Maiko hamburger,
    Unshu mikan (mandarin/satsuma) bread,
  5. Crocodile set lunch,
  6. Gabai!!, double Turkish rice burger,
  7. Conger eel burger,
  8. Karinto manju (dough cake/bean paste bun hybrid),
  9. Sasakama (bamboo leaf-shaped fish cake) fondue,
  10. Sakura ebi (small pink prawn) ice cream,
  11. Uki (warm) sushi,
  12. Saigo Don,
  13. Fried breaded pork with grapefruit set, Tosa ishin burger,
  14. Peanut ramen,
  15. Exclusive Hotoman, (bun filled with local delicacy hoto),
  16. Aka oni (Red devil) chili-flavoured soft ice cream,
  17. Oyster balls and tiny sardine burger set,
  18. Wiener sausage rice bowl,

Now a few of those mean absolutely nothing to me and likely you as well… We’ll wait for Paul in Tokyo to translate for us. Meanwhile, an octopus cabbage burger and some cactus ice cream sounds absolutely… doesn’t it?

Think I’d be afraid to ask for a doggie bag with that crocodile set lunch.

So there you have it. Bon appetit.

See ya!
Bob
