What the Heck is Green Monday?

Hey there! Glad you could find a few minutes between sales to drop by and share a mug of coffee and a virtual treat with me. Now I haven't exactly been living under a rock but Green Monday is as new to me as I am sure it is to a lot of people.

Green Monday is an online retail industry term similar to Cyber Monday. The term was coined by eBay to describe its best sales day in December, usually the second Monday of December.

The 'Green' reference has little to do with the environment. It refers, I am told by credible sources, to the back of the American dollar bill which, in case you have never seen one, is green and thus the auspicious day pays homage to the huge amount of bucks, dollars, pesos, euros, baht, etc. that will literally pour into cash registers everywhere in yet another frenzied display of shopping madness!

Green Monday is defined more specifically by business research organization comScore as the Monday with at least 10 days prior to Christmas. In 2009, $854 million was spent online in the US on Green Monday, with sales in 2011 reaching $1.133 billion. In 2012, Green Monday topped out at $1.27 billion, up 13% from 2011 and the third heaviest online sales day for the season behind Cyber Monday and Dec. 4, 2012 (which had no marketing tie-in), according to comScore.

In 2014, Green Monday online sales grossed a record $1.6 billion, albeit still lower than Cyber Monday's $2.68 billion during the same year.

So, in case you haven't finished your Christmas shopping yet, you will be delighted to know that online and offline retailers in their benevolent magnanimity are giving you yet another chance to spend what little you may have left on your credit cards after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year's Green Monday event takes place on Monday, December 14th. Don't miss it!

See ya in the poor house, eh!
