How Much Does Your Soul Weigh?

Well, hi there! As always, I’m delighted that you clicked by today. So how’s the world treating you? Top up your mug with some Arabica juice and snag a virtual treat on your way to join me here at our usual table. Just finished reading a Stephen Leather book called ‘Nightfall’. In case you’re not familiar with him, Leather is a British author. Spent a lot of time in Kong Kong and writes about ex-SAS, police, ex-police tough guys. Top notch mysteries.

In Nightfall, the hero starts off as a police negotiator who finds out that his parents, who were killed years ago are really adoptive parents. His real father gave him up at birth. Real father turns out to be a Satanist with a mansion and a basement full of occult books worth millions. Oh, and the father sold the baby’s soul to the devil – to be collected on his 33rd birthday which is now only weeks away. The plot thickens. Great story.

In looking through the books in an effort to find a way out of his dilemma, there is mention of a scientist in the 1900s who did experiments where he weighed people just before and after they died and found, to his astonishment, that in each case, the person / body weighed 21 grams less after death. He weighed the whole bed, bedding et al so there would be no chance of error. Intriguing, huh?  I though so and in doing a little ‘soul’ surfing, I discovered a movie on the topic:

“21 Grams starring Sean Penn and Benicio del Torro Directed by Alejandro Gonzales Inaritu

What happens when somebody dies? If he/she loses 21g at the moment of death, could that be the soul leaving the body? After a car accident, those involved stare death in the eye in more ways than one.

Movies don't come cooler than this while retaining brain cells. The film has been made in fragments, so the story doesn't follow a logical pattern. It jumps around in time as revenge, grief and drugs clash head-on in this captivating drama. It will definitely appeal to readers who like home entertainment with a disturbing sting in the tail.

Treat yourself. It's like nothing you've seen before. Special features include a doccie on how the director came upon his strange style.”

So, there you have experimental evidence, albeit 100 years or so ago, but evidence nevertheless, that we suffer an immediate weight loss of 21 grams when we die. Is that the soul leaving the body? If not, what other explanation is there?

What do you think? Thought I’d treat you to another of my digital art creations from a few years ago. This is called “Screams”. See more of my digital creations.

See ya!
