Well
hey there! Great to see you. Got a few bucks tucked away? Willing to move? Fill
your coffee mug and shovel a virtual treat onto your plate while I tell you
about some really cheap land!
Cheap
land is hard to come by these days, especially in Canada.
Vancouver is currently home to the second-most expensive housing market
in the world. Toronto and Calgary, meanwhile, aren’t very far
behind. That’s why it might come as a surprise to learn that many communities
across the country have literally been giving land away for free! Of course,
these are usually small towns and there are some caveats to obtaining it, but
it’s still a heck of a savings!
SAINT-LOUIS-DE-BLANDFORD, QUEBEC
This town, southwest of Quebec City, purchased a large tract of
land and divided it into 40 lots, which they have been giving away to anyone
willing to move there and develop the land since 2013. There are just a few
conditions: The policy requires the buyer to put a $1,000 down payment on the
lot and agree to build a home valued at a minimum of $125,000. The town later
refunds the down payment.
RESTON, MANITOBA
In a very successful attempt at boosting its population, this
small town was offering up land for only $10–less
than the price of a movie ticket at some theatres! Buying the land required a
$1,000 deposit, of which $990 would be returned upon receiving the occupancy
permit. The occupants then have 90 days to begin construction from the closing
date on the offer.
PIPESTONE, MAN.
Inspired by the success of Reston, this rural community also
offered plots of land for the ultra-low
price of $10. The fine print is almost identical as well. Interested
parties must put $1,000 down on the property; they then have 90 days to build
foundations or a basement and then 12 months to complete the house. The $990
will be returned when the job is done.
SCARTH, MAN.
This once-thriving village is now a ghost town, but a dozen lots
were put up for sale for only $10 in 2013.
KING’S POINT, NEWFOUNDLAND
Surrounded by beautiful icebergs and waterfalls, King’s Point is
a great place for any family to settle. It had posted on social media earlier
this year that it was considering a land giveaway as
well, but those ads have since disappeared.
CROWN LANDS, YUKON
Not for the faint of heart, there is still some free crown land
to be scored in the Arctic. Crown land, by the way, refers to land owned by the
federal or provincial government. Basically, they’re willing to give you the
land if you’re willing to turn it into a farm. All you need is to be a Canadian
citizen who has lived in the Yukon for at least one year. If you fit the bill,
you can apply to claim some of that free land for yourself right here.
MUNDARE, ALBERTA
Looking to make some cash intead of settling down? Mundare might
be for you. In 2013, the town was selling downtown lots for a
loonie ($1) to anyone
willing to come into the community and set up their business. Additionally,
these entrepreneurs would also receive sizable tax incentives and reduced rates
for their first three years in business. The only catch? Anyone who buys a lot
has to start construction within one year.
CUPAR, SASKATCHEWAN
This small town north of Regina has been offering fully-serviced
lots since the 1990s. But according to the National Post, some of them were still available in
2008! Building a home there would also come with free municipal taxes and water
service for a year.
CRAIK, SASK.
As its population dwindled, the town of Craik came up with an
idea to salvage itself by creating an eco village and
selling off unserviced land for one dollar. Interested parties just
had to submit applications that detailed their plans for eco-construction and
sustainable living. The place is now a thriving village!
While many of the free land sales listed here have already come
and passed, don’t fret! In many of these cases, this was the second (or even
third) time these communities have offered up free or heavily discounted
property. If they’ve done it once, they’ll probably do it again. And now
you’re wise to this free land! So you won’t miss its next coming.
Why
settle for a free lunch when you could have free land...or at least really
cheap? Bring a snow shovel and winter tires ‘cause here in Canada, we’re hearty
folks! When I lived in Calgary and someone asked me to describe it, I was heard
to say, “Nine months of winter and three months of bad skiing!”
See
ya at the end of the line, eh!
Bob
