A grand and salubrious day to you! Great to see you. Once you’ve filled your mug and snagged a treat, slowly make your way over here. Christine from Toronto sent me this and, knowing your passion for food, knew I had to share it with you. Chris’s note called them Saskatchewan Turtle Burgers but I know they are also popular across the USA. They’re an innovative way to entertain your guests or family…especially if there are kids involved.
This is a Texas-size recipe that makes 4 humungous turtle burgers. You can probably make more but you’ll have to experiment. The burgers do need to be large enough to be able to take the hotdog head, leg and tail inserts.
Ingredients
4 lbs of ground chuck (80% lean)
10 hot dogs of your choice
4 slices of Cheese
2 lbs of bacon
10 hot dogs of your choice
4 slices of Cheese
2 lbs of bacon
Instructions
Form the patties and make them oval like a turtle body. Using a finger make 4 holes at the bottom in each corner of the patty for the legs. Make one hole in the center front from the top for the head.
Cut hotdogs in half and insert each half in the holes of the burgers. It will require quite a lot of handling the meat and reforming it, but give yourself a little time and they will eventually look good.
Cut the hotdogs at the end to simulate the “toes” on each foot
Place a slice of cheese on the top of each turtle.
Weave bacon strips to simulate the shell of the turtle.
Fire up the barbie or heat your oven to 400F and place turtles in the oven for 30-40 minutes until bacon is nice browned and crispy. You may want to use a meat thermometer to check the doneness of the meat (130F for medium).
Voila, a beautiful turtle burger that will make heads turn. Serve them in a bun with you favorite toppings or eat as a steak. It is up to you.
No turtles were harmed in the making of these burgers!
See ya. Gotta go fire up the grill. Oops…better buy one first!
