Now You See Me…Now You Don’t!

Hi ya! How’s tricks? Keeping fit and out of mischief? Nah…neither am I. Brewed up a new pot of coffee in your honour along with a splendid array of aromamungous virtual treats. (He’s creating new words again, like!) Well, if I don’t find a word I want to use, I make one up. Aromamungous is easy to understand if you think about it, eh. Huge and with a tantalizingly delicious aroma. Makes sense to me, eh. But speaking of not seeing something…

Created by Canadian camouflage design company Hyperstealth, Quantum Stealth is a is a material that renders its wearer completely invisible by bending light waves around it, which is in effect very similar to the invisibility cloak worn child wizard extraordinaire, Harry Potter. Whoa, eh!
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could put on your very own invisibility cloak and just roam around undetected? Sadly, that’s not going to be possible for most of us, but if you’re a US soldier, this fantasy could become a reality sooner than you think. Apparently, the US Military is currently backing development of special materials to make American soldiers completely invisible on the battlefield, and according to one camouflage design company, it might soon get its wish.

Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp. CEO, Guy Cramer, says their new “Quantum Stealth” material has finally made the sci-fi/fantasy technology a reality. Unfortunately at this time, we can only take his word for it, as its development is so secret that the company cannot even show footage of how it works, on its website, offering only mock-ups of its effects.

Questions? Get them to the guy before he disappears before your very eyes. No, I don’t want to know about your fantasies…wearing an invisible cloak and… (Why do visions of Porky’s 1-2-3 come to mind?).

See ya, eh!

Do We Live in a Computer Simulation Run by Our Descendants?

Whoa! Hi There. Have I got a wild idea for you today. But first things first, eh. On to the coffee and virtual treats. Okay…now I’m going to freak you out with another strange time and space theory. Ready?

A decade ago, a British philosopher put forth the notion that the universe we live in might in fact be a computer simulation run by our descendants. Double whoa, eh! While that seems far-fetched, perhaps even incomprehensible, a team of physicists at the University of Washington has come up with a potential test to see if the idea holds water
The concept that current humanity could possibly be living in a computer simulation comes from a 2003 paper published in Philosophical Quarterly by Nick Bostrom, a philosophy professor at the University of Oxford. In the paper, he argued that at least one of three possibilities is true:
  • The human species is likely to go extinct before reaching a "posthuman" stage.
  • Any posthuman civilization is very unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of its evolutionary history.
  • We are almost certainly living in a computer simulation.
He also held that "the belief that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation."
Currently, supercomputers using a technique called lattice quantum chromodynamics and starting from the fundamental physical laws that govern the universe can simulate only a very small portion of the universe, said Martin Savage, a UW physics professor.
The supercomputers performing lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations essentially divide space-time into a four-dimensional grid. That allows researchers to examine what is called the strong force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature and the one that binds subatomic particles called quarks and gluons together into neutrons and protons at the core of atoms.
"If you make the simulations big enough, something like our universe should emerge," Savage said. Then it would be a matter of looking for a "signature" in our universe that has an analog in the current small-scale simulations.
If such a concept turned out to be reality, it would raise other possibilities as well. For example, Davoudi suggests that if our universe is a simulation, then those running it could be running other simulations as well, essentially creating other universes parallel to our own.
"Then the question is, 'Can you communicate with those other universes if they are running on the same platform?'" she said.
In the picture above, the conical (red) surface shows the relationship between energy and momentum in special relativity, a fundamental theory concerning space and time developed by Albert Einstein, and is the expected result if our universe is not a simulation. The flat (blue) surface illustrates the relationship between energy and momentum that would be expected if the universe is a simulation with an underlying cubic lattice.
Got that? I knew you would. Meanwhile, I wonder what’s for lunch today? I nice turkey breast sandwich on multigrain bread with a dill pickle and a dash of honey Dijon mustard washed down with a refreshing mug of coffee. Yippee! Dimensionally speaking of course. Say… what happens if those folks in the future are simulating all of us and they stop the simulation? I guess they’d stop to exist as well, wouldn’t they? Dang…what a bummer!
See ya, eh!

Old Mice "Cheat Death"

Hi there! How’re you doing today, eh?  Thanks for clicking by. Coffee’s ready for you and I see by the mug in your hand that you’re ready for coffee so pour yourself a mugful, grab a virtual  treat and mosey over to the table here. Thanks today to Brian in Pattaya, Thailand for sending me the topic for today’s post. I pared it down a mite, like a surgeon removing fat from the body of a grossly obese person – not that that was Brian’s fault, mind you, but I have to keep my posts relatively short lest my readers nod off. Anyway, let’s talk mice…not computer mice – real though old mice.

In a landmark study that sounds like science fiction, a professor at Harvard Medical School regenerated the brains of aging mice by turning on a switch inside their cells.

The mice, who were the equivalent of elderly men, had all the classic signs of old age: Their brains were smaller... they were going blind... they stopped having sex... their hair was gray... and they couldn’t find their way through a maze or remember where their food was.

But when this Harvard professor hit the switch in their cells, the tissues and organs in their body -- including their brains -- started to regenerate and grow back to normal size.

Even a slight change in brain size would have been a miracle... but what happened was even more remarkable. The gray hair was gone. So was the poor eyesight and shrunken brains. In fact, there was nothing left that could distinguish them as “old.”

And here’s the best part: This “Age-Reversing Switch” Can Be Turned On in Us Too

That means we now have the ability to repair our own aging brains... reignite our flagging sex drives... correct our failing eyesight... and sharpen our minds as if we were 21 again.

The “switch” responsible for this dramatic reversal of aging is telomerase. It’s the enzyme that helps you rebuild the “biological clocks” at the end of your DNA called telomeres. Telomeres are the “time keepers” attached to every strand of your DNA. Each time your cells divide, your telomeres get shorter. When your telomeres become too short, cell division stops and your life ends.

By slowing down the loss of your telomeres, you not only extend your lifespan, you stay younger longer. As the telomere gets shorter, your body produces cells that are older, weaker and more decrepit.  This speeding up of telomere loss actually causes your body to transcribe an older, more dysfunctional part of your genome. That means your body becomes weaker, more frail and open to all the diseases of aging.

Slowing the loss of the telomere, and in some cases making the telomere longer, is how you grow “biologically younger.” Regardless of your chronological age, you can enjoy the energy and physical power of someone much younger. When the mice had their telomerase turned on, they were rejuvenated after only one month.

Their telomeres were longer, and their telomerase levels increased. Brain cells that were dormant came back to life, producing new neurons. Their shrunken organs, like spleens and even testes and brain... grew in size.

Key organs functioned better, and the mice got their sense of smell back. The males also produced new sperm cells, and their mates gave birth to larger litters. The mice went on to live long healthy lives.

Now wasn’t that a pleasant tale (or should I say tail?). If you want to learn more about and how you can turn on your telomerase, go to Dr. Al Sears website at: http://www.alsearsmd.com/

Although I don’t (ever notice how close don’t is to doughnut? If you pronounce the apostrophe with an ‘uh’ sound…it’s spot on!) necessarily endorse what he says, he’s a medical doctor, I’m not and I think it is important to keep an open, enquiring mind.

See ya, eh!

Nothing is better than a smile

Hey there! Wonderful to see you today, y'know. Fill your mug and help yourself to one of those chocolate doughnuts, why don't'cha? Say...it's been a while since I've run a story on 'poop' and so I thought...(Oh, here he goes...) that since Christmas is quickly approaching, it was time for my third annual look at what's new in Catalonia pooping dolls (Caganer).

Pooping Computer Scientist

The Caganer was a necessary figure in the Christmas Cribs of the eighteenth century since at that time it was believed that, with his fertile depositions, the soil of the crib would became rich and productive for the coming year! It was also believed that he would bring good health and calm to the body and the soul. Putting this jolly little man in the crib uwas believed to bring good luck and happiness.
This all started three years ago when I saw a story on TV about a man in Spain who had a collection of 1500 of these pooping dolls and every year adds another 10 or so.

Pooping Bride

Want to see more of these delightfully irreverent creations? Go to: http://www.caganer.com/

Hey...they have a whole selection of chocolate crappers, too!

See ya, eh!

Caveman of El Paso

Well now, aren't you a sight for sore eyes. Great to see you and thanks for taking time to click by. Coffee's always fresh here and I try to keep a mouthwatering array of virtual treats for you to choose from. Cave in to temptation, why don't'cha?

Speaking of caves, an articulate, functional "cave man" of El Paso, Texas, continues to roam his neighborhood, often naked, and to resist efforts to bring him back onto the grid, according to October coverage by El Paso's KVIA-TV.

His mountainside subterranean structure, described as "intricate," might be on land owned by the local water utility, which, pending an investigation, could evict him. Some neighbors say they fear the man, who has allegedly swum in their pools and even swiped items from their laundry rooms, but nonetheless, he swears that he is harmless.

"I'm a plasma donor ... drug free" and "sin-free ... baptized and saved." Other neighbors have supported him, he said, and the complainers need to "help the community more."

Well, even though we're nowhere near El Paso, the cave man is welcome to partake of all the virtual doughnuts he wants. A community-spirited gesture, eh! It's the least I can do!

See ya, eh!

Teaching Dogs to Drive

Well, doggone it, it's good to see you today. Feeling a little 'ruff!'? Pour some coffee in your mug and snag one of those scrumptious-looking virtual muffins. Y'know...I remember reading and may even have written about a study showing that pigs were smarter than dogs. Well, let me ask you...how many pigs do you know of that can drive cars? (Now, now...behave!)

I don't know if you read about this in the news but apparently a New Zealand animal charity is actually teaching dogs how to drive cars.
While it’s a bit silly on its face, a clear purpose is behind this program from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Auckland — it wants to show that rescued dogs are smart and that you can train them for many things. The charity wants to find homes for its dogs, so it’s pulling out all the stops.

According to the Aukland SPCA, "Every year, the SPCA need to find homes for thousands of dogs — dogs who have been abused, abandoned, or just forgotten. They may be a mixed up motley bunch, but they’re all smart and they’re all lovable."

Can't you hear the news reporters commenting,
"It's a dog's breakfast out there on the roads this morning."
"There's a dogfight happening on Route 31"
"Ruff going on the highway today!"
"We've got a rollover on the M2 so sit up and stay...away from there."

Well, I'll tell you, there are lots of people out there whose driving leaves a lot to be desired. It seems as though as soon as they are unleashed onto the roads, there's no holding them back. Anyone'd think somebody was offering free beer up ahead, eh?

Aside to the SPCA in Aukland... do you think you can work on having those canines go get us some coffee and doughnuts?

"Fetch, Rover!Drive carefully."

See ya, eh!

The Downside of Cosmetic Surgery

Well, hello there! I'm tickled pink that you found time to click by today. You're just in time for a delightfully perky mug of Arabica and a virtual muffin. Boy, I've been enjoying the muffins here in the Durham Region of Ontari-ari-o. Low fat double fruit. Yum! Say...it's hard to go anywhere or watch TV these days without hearing about cosmetic surgery in one form or another. isn't it? Botox, tummy tucks, liposuction, you name it. Well... here's a different problem that looking gorgeous might bring...

A story from Chinese media in October reported that Mr. Jian Feng won the equivalent of $120,000 in a lawsuit against his well-to-do wife for deceiving him and subsequently giving birth to what Feng thought was an ugly baby. Feng discovered that his wife had had cosmetic surgery -- and thus was not, genetically, the beauty that he married but, in reality, plain-looking.

Ah-ha! She had a botox baby! And plain...ly unacceptable in China at least. Bear in mind that the Asian way of thinking does not always parallel Western thought processes. I remember a long time ago reading at the bottom of the front page of the Singapore Straits-Times (Singapore's National English paper) a story about a woman who took a fellow to court accusing him of raping her. The judge threw the case out because...wait for it..."Nobody would rape her...she was too ugly!'

What can I say...other than nothing?

See ya, eh!

Eduardo Relero’s Mind-Blowing Optical Illusions

Hi there! How's it going, eh? Help yourself to a perky mug of coffee and a virtual treat to give your system a pleasant jolt. Say...from time to time I write about different artists. Well, here's an artist who takes realism to the public with his amazing street art. Take a look...

Argentinian street artist Eduardo Relero has the special talent of turning something as dull as pavements into incredible three-dimensional artworks that put people in danger of walking into lampposts starring at them.

48-year-old Eduardo Relero, who lives in Madrid, Spain, will spend up to two weeks working on one of his amazing 3D murals, which when viewed from the perfect angle look to be rising up from the pavement or sinking deeper into it. The talented artist began creating his beautiful artworks in 1990, on the streets of Rome, and has since then gone on to create breathtaking murals in Germany, France, Spain and America.

“I realized that by taking my art out in the public, to festivals, theaters and events, I would be free to make drawings more to my liking, ” the artist says, adding that it’s also a great way of getting ideas across to big groups of people. With themes ranging from flying lions, giant waterfalls and gaping craters to giant feet sticking out of gaping holes in the ground and ancient figures lying in tombs that are actually just the tops of public benches, Relero seems to be one of those artists that never run out of ideas.

Way to go, Eduardo! Neat stuff, eh! Want to see more of his work?

Remember Beetlejuice?

Of course you do. One of my favourite movies. Let the java flow into your mug and help yourself to a juicy non-beetle virtual treat! Obviously I am not the only Beetlejiuce fan around but here's one fan who's gone the whole nine yards...

Beetlejuice might have been very popular back in the 80s and 90s, but the character is hardly remembered these days. Of course, things are different for New Yorker Bruce Christensen, a loyal Beetlejuice fan. The owner of the only Beetlejuice museum in the world, run out of his rent-stabilized studio apartment on West 34th Street, 48-year old Christensen has over eighty artifacts related to the 1989 movie character.

Christensen’s obsession with all things Beetlejuice began in 1991, when he was just looking around at a KB Toys outlet on Long Island and found a Beetlejuice figurine with a removable head for just 99 cents. He bought one, but he couldn’t stop thinking about it all night.

The next day, he ran back to the store and bought as many varieties of the action figures as he could, like the Showtime Beetlejuice, Spinhead Beetlejuice, Shish Kabab Beetlejuice and Phantom Flyer.

His collection started off very small and expanded as he travelled. When he went to Amsterdam he found bottles of Beetlejuice; in Hollywood he found the typewritten script and the original press kit of the movie.

Over the years, friends also started gifting him Beetlejuice merchandise and memorabilia. When the 400 sq. ft. museum opened, he had only 57 artifacts, but now the collection has grown to over 80.

Some of the other gems in Christensen’s collection include a VHS tape of the movie, Michael Keaton’s autograph, and a Beetlejuice comic that he purchased off EBay. And in case you’re wondering about those bottles of Beetlejuice, well, they do contain a liquid of some sort, which according to the label is five-and-a-half percent alcohol.

I've never been a serious collector of anything except stamps when I was in my teens and small monkey figurines a bit later. What do you collect?Anything of note? Send me a picture and I'll run it in the blog (at my discretion of course). Remember...this is a public blog!

See ya, eh!

Paint It Gone

Hey there! Wonderful to see you today. Hope you are having a good one. Me? I'm stiff as all get out from moving but expect to get back to my normal pain level anytime between a week and forever. Meanwhile a good mug of coffee and an asteroid-sized virtual muffin offers a pleasant diversion. Can I pour you a mug? Help yourself to the virtual treats.  Did I chance to mention 'asteroid' before? Well segue into today's topic...

If an asteroid is ever on a collision course with Earth, it is feasible that the planet could be saved by firing paintballs at it, according to an MIT graduate student whose detailed plan won this year's prize in a United Nations space council competition, announced in October.

White paint powder, landing strategically on the asteroid, would initially bump it a bit, but in addition would facilitate the sun's photons bouncing off the solid white surface. Over a period of years, the bounce energy would divert the body even farther off course.

The already identified asteroid Apophis, which measures 1,500 feet in diameter and is projected to approach Earth in 2029, would require five tons of paintball ammo. [MIT press release, 10-26-2012]

And just who is going to fire five tons of paint at a fast approaching asteroid? May as well fling limp spaghetti at it. Hey...I'm not kidding here... if you fire five tons of spaghetti and meatballs at Apophis which is probably travelling towards us at a kazillion miles per hour, just the weight of the meatballs should be enough to nudge it off course a little...not to mention the weight of the tasty spaghetti and tomato sauce, eh! Sure, you may think it's a silly idea...for example, how are we going to get the Spagbol (Australian for Spaghetti Bolognese) up to where we have to slingshot it at the asteroid? Minor detail.

Remember. too, that even if we divert Apophis in 2029, it is scheduled to come back even closer and possibly on a collision course in 2036 (probably looking for dessert after enjoying a feed of Spagbol in '29, eh). Not to worry...I've already got my research assistant working on a Tiramasu Torpedo!

See ya, eh!

Bacon-Scented Shaving Cream Makes Men’s Mornings Smell Like Heaven

How's it going today, eh? We're up to our eyeballs in boxes and suitcases. Just moved yesterday and our furniture didn't arrive so we had to borrow an air mattress from my sister. It was a royal screw up at the furniture store who had scheduled delivery for December 11 instead of December 1. We had a few words with store and are expecting delivery momentarily. Anyway, pour some java juice into your mug before you die of thirst listening to me rant...and help yourself to a virtual bacon and egg English muffin why don't'cha? Everybody (people of the Jewish and Muslim faiths excepted) loves bacon, eh. Well here are a couple young entrepreneurs who are taking that to a personal level.

As if bacon perfume wasn’t enough to help people carry the smell of the tasty treat with them wherever they went, a Seattle-based food company has just launched a ’high end’ limited-edition Bacon Shaving Cream.

Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow, the two man behind J&D Foods, have just released their newest idea – a bacon-scented shaving cream that will allegedly make users ’smell and feel like a champion’. Yup, the smell of bacon usually has that effect on people, but what I’d like to know is how does one restrain from having a taste of the heavenly-smelling shaving cream. After all, as inventor Justin Esch himself admits, “there is nothing more powerful than the smell of bacon, nothing.”

Company co-founder Dave Lefkow also wrote in a press release: ”Bacon Shaving Cream is a high end, luxurious bacon-scented shaving cream for all skin types. Our advanced heat-activated aromatic technology lasts for hours and delivers maximum bacon scent when you need it most.” He recommends using it after a hot shower or before an important date with a potential soul-mate. It will probably make them want to eat you up.

AS a Quebecker, I have to take issue with that "Nothing more powerful..." statement above. Try walking behind someone who is carrying a fresh box of French Fries laced with vinegar. The aroma drifting through the air and enticing your nostrils is almost worth bumping into the person, grabbing the fries and quickly running in the opposite direction while scoffing down those fries before someone else gets the same idea!

See ya, eh!

Bob in a box!
